Special exhibition: Humboldt lives!
Botany in motion - animals in the tropics
Alexander von Humboldt was one of the most famous natural scientists and a dazzling personality. His scientific work is unique. He tried to measure the world, climbed the highest mountains of the Andes and crossed remote primeval forests on the Orinoco to do so. He is considered the founder of plant geography and a pioneer of ecology - and viewed nature as a complex, interconnected system. However, Humboldt did not discover a universal law of nature. As an explorer, he was already a legend during his lifetime, and posterity has often exalted him in heroic fashion.
Our special exhibition "Humboldt Lives!" (8.5 to 29.9.2019, Museum of Nature Hamburg - Zoology - Botanical Garden - Loki Schmidt Haus) accompanied the German naturalist on the occasion of his 250th birthday on his most important research trip to America in the years 1799-1804. We followed Humboldt to the tropics and the Andes and questioned his findings and legacies. Discover the real Humboldt with us!
