Species Change and Nature Conservation

One of LIB's greatest tasks is to observe species and ecosystems. Around the globe or at your doorstep in Hamburg, researchers study and try to understand how a community of organisms (known as “biocenosis”) undergoes change in water, the air, or in the ground. Their studies contribute to environmental protection. Several projects invite Hamburg citizens to contribute their knowledge and observations.

Research projects

In cooperation with the City of Hamburg, environmental associations, and foundations, LIB is compiling studies on the state of and changes in species diversity in Hamburg and northern Germany. These studies will be used, among other things, as a basis for designating nature conservation areas and creating Red Lists of endangered species. They will also be used to analyze habitats, population data, and the dangers facing individual species.

Environmental education activities

LIB invites the Hamburg public to a series of activities and projects that will introduce you to animal and plant societies in Hamburg and the Hamburg region, and give you an opportunity to observe and document flora and fauna.
