Other collections

These include smaller collections of trace fossils, as well as pieces from regional and national fossil deposits such as the Lägerdorf outcrop, the island of Helgoland or the Messel outcrop. As early as the 1930s, Prof. Dr. Erhard Voigt developed the “lacquer peels method” in Hamburg. With this method, sedimentological structures and fossils - e.g. in sand or gravel pits - can be preserved over the long term. The more than 1,000 of lacquer peels recorded over the decades are stored in the of lacquer peels archive and used for research and teaching.
