Special exhibitions of the LIB Hamburg location

We went diving: In this photo exhibition at the Museum of Nature - Zoology, we went on an "expedition to the deep sea". Here, visitors discovered first-hand how researchers go on expeditions and explore the depths of the ocean. The crew of the IceAGE3 expedition was accompanied photographically during their 35-day journey along the coast of Iceland, and we had the honor of presenting the resulting photographs within a special exhibition from September 25th to December 1st. A film screening completed the vivid impression of the research trip.

Crunching ground at the sea's edge - all sand or mudflats? The special exhibition "Experiencing Mudflats - Understanding Mudflat Soils" dug deep and uncovered a diverse, sensitive ecosystem. It traced tracks in the mudflats, fanned out landscapes, colors and shapes, and invited visitors to feel the sticky silt between their toes on hikes. From Dec. 12, 2019, to Aug. 2, 2020, the exhibition could be experienced at the Museum of Nature - Zoology - jointly conceived by the Authority for Environment and Energy (BUE), the Leibniz Institute for Biodiversity Change (LIB) and the Institute of Soil Science at the University of Hamburg.

The special exhibition "Humboldt Lives!" accompanies the German naturalist on the occasion of his 250th birthday on his most important expedition to America. We follow Humboldt to the tropics and the Andes and question his findings and legacies. Alexander von Humboldt tried to measure the world. He is considered the founder of plant geography and the mastermind of ecology - and viewed nature as a complex, interconnected system. As a researcher, he was already a legend during his lifetime, and posterity has often exalted him to heroic heights. Discover the true Humboldt with us!

He has always been a woodworm, says Götz-Peter Reichelt. Many years ago, a coincidence led him to the woodcarving artists of the village of Ubud on Bali. In the meantime, the photographer has become one of them himself. Chip by chip, he produces objects that are built up from one continuous piece of wood like a puzzle - and tell animal stories with details such as filigree interior worlds. With his models, he wants to bring the endangered animal world into focus. His Noah's Ark with 71 pairs of animals even holds the world record as the largest work of art of its kind. ...

The exhibition and event project "Indians - Lost Worlds" challenges common clichés and tells a different story of the Indians of North America. From June 24 to September 30, 2018, themed stations and events will take visitors to the Museum of Nature - Zoology and Botanical Garden inside the everyday lives of North America's indigenous peoples. The thematic special exhibition follows the footsteps of the naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace (1823-1913) to the hot spots of biodiversity in Southeast Asia and the Amazon. Spacious audiovisual installations by 17 contemporary artists transform the exhibition hall of the Museum of Nature - Zoology into an (endangered) forest habitat.
