Antje the walrus draws crowds at Universität Hamburg’s Zoological Museum. A modern museum of natural history would be a new home for her.
Hamburg is getting a new museum of natural history. The decision was announced by senator for science Katharina Fegebank on Friday evening, 8 May 2020, at a press conference that was held as part of the Hamburg coalition negotiations.
Katharina Fegebank stressed the fact that the SPD and Greens had agreed on the establishment of a new museum of natural history where the collections could be further developed and corresponding exhibition spaces created. “We have made a very clear commitment to go down this path and create a modern museum of natural history,” says Katharina Fegebank.
The decision to admit CeNak to the Leibniz Association is scheduled for the end of June. Then the Joint Science Conference (Gemeinsame Wissenschaftskonferenz, GWK) will discuss the merger of CeNak and the Zoological Research Museum Alexander König (ZFMK) in Bonn, as well as the establishment of a Leibniz institute for the analysis of biodiversity change.NDR recording of the Hamburg press conference (information about the Museum of Natural History at minute 4):
