The Joint Science Conference (Gemeinsame Wissenschaftskonferenz, GWK) has decided that CeNak at Universität Hamburg will be incorporated into the Leibniz Association. Together with the Zoological Research Museum Alexander Koenig in Bonn, it will form a new Leibniz institute for the analysis of the evolution of biodiversity, combining 2 locations in Bonn and Hamburg. The merger is set to take place at the beginning of 2021. The Joint Science Conference’s decision also clears the path for a new research museum, in which exhibitions, research, and collections will form an integral part of the new Leibniz institute.
“The decision by the Joint Science Conference is an important milestone on the path to a natural history research museum for Hamburg,” says Prof. Dr. Matthias Glaubreicht, scientist and director of CeNak. “The positive vote is a definite step forward on the path to our planned Evolutioneum. As a window into science, it should also make the role of humans as an increasingly important influencing factor on Earth literally tangible, both in Hamburg and beyond.”
