Teaching

The following two modules are offered regularly. In addition, parts of "Animal Biodiversity" are taken.

Elective module "Ecology of the Wadden Sea" (6 SWS)
Summer semester
The practical course takes place in annual rotation at the AWI Wadden Sea Station in List on Sylt (focus on sandflats) or at the Marine Biology Station in Concarneau (Brittany) (focus on rocky tidal flats). In addition to knowledge of marine invertebrates and their habitats, the focus is on conducting field experiments lasting several days. The focus is on the independent planning and modification of experiments. The aim is to formulate scientific questions and to design, carry out and, if necessary, modify appropriate experiments. Planning, experience phase and conclusion are each accompanied by oral reports, the conclusion additionally by a protocol.

Masters module "Functional Morphology of Invertebrates" (5.5 SWS)
Winter semester
The Master's module takes place in cooperation with Dr. Friedrich. The aims are knowledge of the structure, function and evolution of animal organs. For this purpose, different invertebrates are studied with different morphological methods: Scanning and transmission electron microscopy, confolake laser scanning microscopy. The corresponding techniques as well as the preparative work (as far as time permits) will be taught in the course. A specific organ system is to be focused on and finally presented in a paper and protocol. The module consists of a blocked practical part (4.5 SWS) and a one-hour lecture "Evolution of organ systems" (1 SWS) accompanying the semester.
