Long Day
of the CityNature
Hamburg 2026

Hamburg: a land of two rivers, the Elbe and the Alster, a city of canals with more bridges than anywhere else in Europe. There is life everywhere, as well as in the harbour basin in the middle of the city, in the lakes in the surrounding area, in ponds, pools and puddles and even in the smallest drop of water. "Everything flows." This is the motto of the Long Day of CityNature on 13-14 June 2026, which will focus on life on and in the water.

Programme publication: beginning of May 2026

Registration starts on Wednesday, 27 May 2026!

Our programme:

Worms in water - the fascinating life cycle of stringworms

In late summer you can sometimes find long, thin worms in streams and puddles. How do they get there? Are they dangerous? This short lecture shows the fascinating life cycle of a largely unknown group of worms.

Why and how do we study fish?

With over 37,000 species, fish are the most species-rich vertebrates that can survive in ice-cold oceans, the dark deep sea or even in drying waters. But how do we find out how they live and adapt? Dr Timo Moritz has been interested in animals, especially fish, since his childhood and works as a fish researcher at the Museum der Natur in Hamburg. He will take you on a journey into the world of fish and fish scientists. He will answer questions such as: Are there still new fish species to be discovered? How do you research fish in a museum? And how do you make fish transparent in order to examine their skeleton?
