Hamburg: a land of two rivers, the Elbe and the Alster, a city of canals with more bridges than anywhere else in Europe. There is life everywhere, as well as in the harbour basin in the middle of the city, in the lakes in the surrounding area, in ponds, pools and puddles and even in the smallest drop of water."Everything flows." This is the motto of the Long Day of CityNature on 13-14 June 2026, which will focus on life on and in the water.

Sea urchins, corals and starfish
A look at the scientific collection of invertebrates shows that many animal groups are much more diverse than one might imagine. Sea urchins, starfish and corals are used to show how a basic structure can be varied to adapt to different habitats.

Streams and rivers of the past
What sediments reveal about the "primeval Elbe": The "primeval valley" of the Elbe was formed during the last ice age, and melting glaciers have left their mark on Hamburg's subsoil. In collaboration with the State Geological Survey, we show how the Hamburg Elbe area has developed over the past 20,000 years or so.

Why and how do we study fish?
With over 37,000 species, fish are the most species-rich vertebrates that can survive in ice-cold oceans, the dark deep sea or even in drying waters. But how do we find out how they live and adapt? Dr Timo Moritz has been interested in animals, especially fish, since his childhood and works as a fish researcher at the Museum der Natur in Hamburg. He will take you on a journey into the world of fish and fish science. He will answer questions such as: Are there still new fish species to be discovered? How do you research fish in a museum? And how do you make fish transparent in order to examine their skeleton?
