Habitat Ocean - Hidden water worlds between the deep sea and the beach

Water as a resource and habitat is the focus of the Hamburg Horizons 2025

The world's oceans are the largest, yet barely explored habitat on earth. In their talks, three of our scientists outline how their research helps us to better understand the diverse water worlds - and to preserve them for the future. In the evening, they will exclusively open the doors to their valuable collections.

The in-depth evening at the LIB's Museum der Natur Hamburg invites you to discover the hidden and fascinating diversity of our aquatic worlds - from mighty marine mammals to tiny worms. We hardly know who lives with whom on the high seas, in the diffuse light of the deep sea and between the grains of sand on coasts and beaches. And this at a time when the world's oceans are suffering more and more from shipping, deep-sea mining, overfishing and rising temperatures. During guided tours of the important fish and crustacean collections as well as the invertebrate collection, our researchers show the scientific treasures of the museum. In their keynote speeches followed by discussions, they describe the uniqueness and fragility of the aquatic habitat. Their research goal: to better understand nature in order to protect it.

Speakers

Dr Nancy Fabiola Mercado Salas conducts research from the deep sea to the Elbe, on coasts and beaches. The crustacean expert and collection curator at the LIB in Hamburg would like to utilise her research knowledge - for example for future-oriented decisions in nature conservation or for the development of better legal foundations in the interests of nature.
Dr Timo Moritz has had fascinating encounters with devil rays, trembling catfish and blue sharks. The fish expert and collection curator at the LIB in Hamburg conducts research in South America, Sudan and Taiwan - as well as in the Baltic Sea. With his work, he wants to increase understanding of completely protected marine areas.
Prof Dr Andreas Schmidt-Rhaesa heads the Department of Invertebrates at the LIB in Hamburg. Many of these animals live in the sea - some of them hidden between grains of sand on the beach. His collection includes sponges, cnidarians, various groups of worms, echinoderms and tunicates.
