As part of the opening event for the special exhibition "Indians - Lost Worlds," LIB invites you to a "Literature Meets Nature" reading on Wednesday, June 27. The focus will be on the book "In the Shadow of the Explorers. Indigenous companions of European explorers".
Political scientist, historian and book author Prof. Dr. Volker Matthies questions the role of guides, interpreters and informants in the expeditions to non-European continents. Actress Monika Söhnel-Häckermann reads passages from the book. Joachim Telgenbüscher, senior editor at the magazine P.M. History, moderates the event.
To this day, the image persists that the famous explorers and exploratory travelers wandered through foreign lands or sailed across oceans on their own. Alexander von Humboldt, for example, is known as the explorer of South America - but did he find his way alone? And who were the people in the background, the helpers on the ground, who also contributed to the success of the ventures? Author Prof. Dr. Volker Matthies puts their contribution to the surveying of the world in a more central light.
