On April 8, the special exhibition on Eocene will initially start digitally. The content will be available from 4 p.m.
In every end lies a new beginning - and that is what the Eocene tells us about. During this period, 56 to 34 million years ago, mammals and birds inherited the dominance of the dinosaurs, thus laying the foundation for today's diversity of animals. On April 8, 2021, starting at 4 p.m., the special exhibition "Eocene. At the beginning of our world" will start at the Museum of Nature - Zoology Hamburg and take visitors digitally on a journey into the past.
Stroll through the exhibition - without leaving your home: "Eocene. At the Beginning of Our World" can be explored completely digitally and - after the opening, which will also be digital - can be accessed on the website of the Center for Natural History as a virtual tour. The event will begin at 4 p.m. with a welcoming address by CeNak Director Prof. Dr. Matthias Glaubrecht; afterwards, all interested parties are cordially invited to explore the Eocene. The contents can be found here - as soon as it starts.
In the exhibition you will encounter, among other things, contemporary witnesses of the past epoch: it shows the diversity of the animal world of that time in the form of fossils and inclusions in amber as well as reconstructions. Long extinct creatures, such as the giant ratite Gastornis or the small prehistoric horse Propalaeotherium parvulum, reveal how extraordinary and for us strange the animal world of that time seems today.
The program will remain digital for the time being until the museum can safely open its doors to visitors again. Then there will also be complementary events in presence - for example guided tours. Until then, online talks with researchers are also planned and there will be an opportunity to look over the shoulder of the exhibition team, who will provide exciting behind-the-scenes insights in accompanying videos.
