The next campaign weekend is themed "Naturally Hamburg".
On the trail of cuckoo bumblebees, asparagus chickens and quaking grass, animal and plant experts roam the green corners of Hamburg every year during the StadtNatur action weekend. On June 13 and 14, 2020, CeNak, in its fourth year as a cooperation partner of the Long Day of CityNature Hamburg and the GEO Day of Nature, once again invites interested parties to numerous excursions.
Experiencing nature on your doorstep and understanding its diversity is the focus of this weekend, which builds a bridge between citizens interested in nature and specialists, protected natural areas and urban habitats shaped by humans, enjoyment of nature and scientific inventory of species.
In terms of content, the 2020 event will focus on how nature is faring in the city's parks and green spaces, what opportunities there are for ecological enhancement, and how Hamburg's nature reserves can be used gently as recreational spaces.
"Parks and green spaces not only represent important leisure and recreational areas for the city's population, but also serve as habitats for numerous animal and plant species. In the past, these urban habitats often played only a minor role in the course of biodiversity surveys. We want to minimize this research gap in the 2020 season, at least at selected sites, and conduct a species inventory as part of the GEO Day of Nature," says Dr. Martin Kubiak, a scientist in the field of animal biodiversity and nature conservation and project manager of the StadtNatur action weekend at CeNak. The cooperation partner is the Ministry for the Environment and Energy with the large-scale nature conservation project "Naturally Hamburg".
With almost 450 citizens who helped to record species of the city at more than 30 different locations such as the Elbe island Neßsand, the Duvenstedter Brook or the planned NSG Diekbek in the north, the nature inventory in June 2019 was again a great success. Together with designated species experts, CeNak scientists were able to detect over 1,400 animal and plant species in the metropolitan region.
