Within the DFG-funded research project „Testing a riverine Radiation“ our scientist and PhD-Student Nora Lentge-Maaß did a field excursion to the Kaek River (central Thailand) in March 2016. Since several years the Silpakorn University in Nakhon Pathom and the CeNak are cooperating in a DAAD sponsored exchange program. This was initiated by Prof. Dr. Duangduen Krailas and Prof. Dr. Matthias Glaubrecht who since then exchange material as well as students to share knowledge and gain experience.
This year’s field trip Nora Lentge-Maaß visited 29 locations on the Kaek River as well as Kwae Noi River, Loei River, and Pa Sak River, where she was able to find six distinct freshwater snail species of the genus Brotia. The students in Nakhon Pathom will do research on the morphology and parasitic infection. Another part of the collection was sent to the CeNak, were we will investigate the snails regarding shell traits, feeding and reproductive modes as well as the population genetics. Those snails could give insights into the “mystery of mysteries” according to Darwin, and with that could give a hint to the question of how species arise.
