How is a scientifically prepared insect actually created? What steps are involved and what do we use such specimens for in research?
Our open insect dissection gives you the rare opportunity to look over the shoulder of our expert Rebecca Geisler - a guide at the museum and biology student. On site in the zoological exhibition, she will demonstrate live how a collected insect is turned into a durable, scientifically usable specimen. We will gain an insight into the typical steps of taxidermy: from the "mounting" of dried animals to the careful alignment of wings and legs to the professional pinning and labelling for the collection.
Questions are always welcome in between: How much fine motor skills do I need? Why are standardised postures important? And what role do specimens play today in research, museums and nature conservation? Find out on 25 January in our zoology department!
