Hamburg Horizons Security - Museum der Natur Hamburg

This year, the ‘Hamburger Horizonte – Science Meets Society’ series is focusing on the theme of ‘Security’.

As part of this focus, Dr Ulrich Kotthoff, Director of the Museum of Nature – Geology and Palaeontology, uses exhibits to explain how and why, over the past 600 million years, various living creatures – from primitive crabs to giant squids – have developed armour, weapons of attack, new sensory organs and behaviours have developed over the past 600 million years in various living organisms – from primitive crabs to giant squids – and what parallels exist with military developments and inventions.

Dr Ulrich Kotthoff, Head of the Hamburg Museum of Natural History – Geology and Palaeontology

From international conflicts and the protection of critical infrastructure to climate risks and the importance of social cohesion: from 13 October to 23 November, the ‘Hamburger Horizonte’ festival will explore the many facets of security. Representatives from academia, politics, culture and civil society will discuss how security is shaped today, what new challenges threaten it, and how we can navigate the conflicting priorities between freedom, protection and justice. Over 40 Hamburg-based academic and science communication institutions are contributing to the diverse programme of discussions, lectures, workshops and other interactive formats.
