With these words, Katharina Fegebank, Second Mayor and Senator for Science, Research and Equality of Hamburg, invites all interested parties to explore the exhibition "Eocene - At the Beginning of Our World." It is a journey back in time to the Middle Ages of the Earth, when tropical temperatures covered Central Europe with jungle. Pollen grains and single-celled organisms from marine and lake deposits, fossil insects and living creatures preserved in amber provide the head of the Museum of Nature - Geology at LIB with detailed reports on life in past Earth eras such as the Eocene. This allows him to reconstruct past ecosystems and determine past climate changes.
Photo: UHH, Hansen

How do you bring the nature of this time to life for an exhibition? How do you succeed in astonishing visitors with scientific findings, fossils and fragments? Julia Pawlowski is a designer specializing in visual science communication. Together with the scientific curators, she has given the Eocene exhibition its face.
Photo: UHH/CeNak, Paran Pour

During this period, 56 to 34 million years ago, mammals and birds inherited the dominance of the dinosaurs, thus laying the foundation for today's diversity of animals. On April 8, 2021, starting at 4 p.m., the special exhibition "Eocene. At the beginning of our world" will start at the Museum of Nature - Zoology Hamburg and take visitors digitally on a journey into the past.
Photo: Collage mit Gastornis, Prachtkäter und Leptictidium, © Tim Bertelink
